About The Allen School

About the Nursing Assistant Program
Nursing assistants are valuable members of any health care team. They perform a myriad of duties, including providing bedside care to patients, helping with feeding, dressing, and walking, and observing patient progress and reporting to registered nurses and/or supervisors. They work under the supervision of a registered nurse and are often the ones who spend most time with patients. As such important components of a patient’s health care team, nursing assistants need to be skilled and trained.
The Allen School offers students the opportunity to become nursing assistants. Some of the skills they must learn and master are communication, infection control, patient hygiene, vital signs and body systems and diet and feeding techniques. In addition, students must learn to assist with admissions, discharge, transfers and exams, learn the stages of sexual growth and development, assist with moving patients, and monitor psychological changes in patients, particularly elderly ones.
In addition, students will complete an internship in a health care facility. This experience will provide them with the skills and knowledge they need to be good nursing assistants. Upon completion of the Nursing Assistant program, students will be to take the State Board Exam. This allows them to become Certified Nursing Assistants. Allen even offers the opportunity for nursing assistants to upgrade their skills and knowledge to become nurse technicians.
