About Mercy College
Mercy College has campuses in Dobbs Ferry, the Bronx, Manhattan, White Plains, and Yorktown. Programs of study include health, business, counseling/psychology, and teacher training.
Mercy was established as an all women’s college in 1950 by the Sisters of Mercy, and in 1969, it became co-educational and nonsectarian. Today, Mercy educates about 9,000 students from diverse backgrounds. Students range in ethnic backgrounds, as well as age. The typical undergraduate student is twenty-seven years old.
The flexible scheduling provided by Mercy allows students to work and study concurrently. The Dobbs Ferry campus of Mercy College has about 2,700 students.
About the RN to BSN Nursing Program
Mercy College offers a program in nursing that allows Registered Nurses to earn their bachelor’s degree. This opens up job opportunities and earning potential. Full-time students usually complete the RN to BSN program in one to two years.
Those taking the program half-time usually take two to three years. Courses include general nursing skills and fundamentals, anatomy and physiology, professional nursing, transcultural nursing, research, health policy, leadership and management, health assessment, community nursing, health promotion, externship, and more. People interested in taking this course must be Registered Nurses and meet minimum GPA requirements. There is also a pre-admission interview process.
People who are not registered nurses cannot apply for this program. There are several schools, however, with which Mercy College is affiliated with that can provide nursing education, such as Westchester Community College , Cochran School of Nursing , Helene Fuld School of Nursing , and Borough of Manhattan Community College .
About the Legal Nursing Program
This is also a program designed for Registered Nurses. This allows them to become certified legal nursing consultants. Legal nurses work in a variety of settings, such as law firms, hospitals, insurance companies, and other types of health care facilities.
They evaluate medical malpractice and worker compensation claims, prepare expert witnesses for trial, serve as expert witnesses, prepare legal documents, assist with trial preparation as well as during trials.
Applicants must be RN's, have at least 2000 hours of recent clinical experience, and an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from an approved institution. Courses center on these areas, and the Legal Nurse program is designed as a five and a half month day program or a nine and a half month evening program.
Master’s Degrees in Nursing Education and Nursing Administration
These two programs are offered at the graduate level and both are focused on current nurses who want to either teach or go into managerial positions. The Nursing Education program typically takes about two years to complete, and the focus is on integrating clinical practice with health care policy, ethics, theory, and research and leadership.
Graduates will be qualified to teach associate and bachelor level courses. The Nursing Administration program also takes about two years to complete and includes courses in management theory, financial management, human resources, and strategic planning. Graduates will be able to work as directors, managers, staff developers, and consultants in a wide variety of health care facilities.
Accreditation
Mercy College is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The Nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing (CCNE).
Faculty
Mercy College is proud of its faculty. There are Fulbright Scholars and nationally respected experts. The faculty members travel to the different Mercy College campuses to ensure that students at each get the same quality education. Class sizes are small and students can get to know their teachers, which helps them learn more efficiently and confidently. In addition, there are career services and academic tutoring available to further assist students in achieving their goals.
Facilities
The Dobbs Ferry campus of Mercy College has 38 classrooms, computer labs, library, gym, science labs, student activities and administration offices, a dining hall, and a residence hall. There are also five outdoor tennis courts, a pool, a soccer and baseball field, and a track. Set in a beautiful and quiet location, Mercy College is an ideal learning environment.
Financial Aid
Mercy College participates in federal student aid programs, so applicants need to fill out a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to determine if they are eligible for state and federal grants and loans. There are also Mercy Assistance Grants, private scholarships and loans, and academic scholarships available, so students should speak with financial aid representatives as soon as possible.

Dobbs Ferry, named in 1698 after Jeremiah Dobbs, who ran a ferry from there, the village is still small and can be described without condescension as “quaint.” There are beautiful views, a warm and friendly atmosphere, a good business environment, and easy access to one of the biggest cities in the world.
