About Midland Lutheran College
Midland Lutheran College, established in 1883, has a reputation of academic excellence in the health sciences and provides a plethora of nursing programs to ensure that students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to take advantage of this health care trend in a liberal Christian context. The professional nursing courses prepare the student for entry-level positions in nursing, while giving a foundation for further studies
Applications for admission to the nursing program are considered on interest and performance. Applicants need to have a high school diploma or GED equivalent with specified performance levels before admission. They are also required to have a college GPA level of at least 2.50. Applicants must have also successfully completed a nursing assistant program with a “C” or better average.
Graduates are able to write the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to practice as registered nurses in the state of Nebraska.
About the Traditional BSN Program
Students with nursing majors must complete the following requirements:
55 credit hours of nursing courses as outlined in the nursing course manual. These courses are amended to reflect the changing face of nursing, so it is recommended that the student check with the nursing department for an up-to-date list.
Coursework will include Fundamentals of Nursing, Health Assessment, Normal Nutrition, Parent-Child Nursing, Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, and Nursing Research among others. The students are also expected to complete 48 credit hours of sciences such as chemistry, biology, sociology, psychology and mathematics.
Because students are completing a bachelor’s degree, a number of general studies credits will be required. Students will complete oral communication, sociology, and physical education courses as part of this degree.
L.P.N. Connection (LPN-BSN)
This program allows licensed practical nurses to upgrade their training to receive a Bachelor in Science in nursing.. The applicant may transfer any recognized credits in pursuit of this degree and use their current knowledge and experience for credits. For minimum performance levels and recognized credits, please contact the admissions office.
Applicants will be required to complete any credit hours that have not been transferred.
B.E.N.D. (RN-BSN)
The Baccalaureate Experiential Nursing Degree (B.E.N.D.) program allows registered nurses to receive credits for past work experience in recognized environments. They may use these credits to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Midland. For performance levels, recognized credit experience hours and course requirements, the applicant should contact the admissions office.
Nutrition Minor
The nutrition minor is designed as a support for any health-related major. Students wishing to take nutrition as a minor must complete 11 credit hours in biology and nutrition and an extra three credit hours in nutrition specific courses like Clinical Nutrition and Normal Nutrition. Specific course layout plans and choices are determined by the department office. This program is invaluable in a traditional health care setting, but it can also be quite helpful in residential centers and health clubs.
Gerontology Minor
A minor in gerontology will give the student knowledge and skills specific to the medical needs of an aging patient clientele. Students wishing to obtain the gerontology minor must have at least 21 credit hours in psychology, sociology, social sciences and gerontology. This minor will allow students to further their knowledge for application in their specific career fields. This program will help students to become aware of the special needs of aging patients as well as how to promote good health among older adults.
