Going to School in Marietta, GA
Marietta has a population of around 60,000 and is one of the largest suburbs of Atlanta. In the 1830s, the Army Corps of Engineers chose Marietta as the base of operations as they began construction on a rail line north to Chattanooga.
This attracted a lot of businesses to the city and spurred substantial growth. During the Civil War, only about 30 years later, the town was virtually destroyed by General Sherman’s troops as they embarked on the infamous “March To The Sea.”
Today Marietta enjoys prominence as the county seat and offers easy access to the sophisticated and contemporary lifestyle of Atlanta.
This contrasts dramatically with many of the antebellum characteristics of modern day Marietta. The city embraces its past and features many Civil War battle sites, A “Gone With The Wind” Museum and many other interesting historical attractions. Kennesaw Mountain presents a breathtaking view of both Marietta and Atlanta.
