About the Practical Nursing Program

Practical Nurses provide direct patient care and administer medications and treatments to patients under the supervision of Registered Nurses and physicians. Practical Nurses are employed in most healthcare settings and, with the current nursing shortage, are in demand.

At Kaplan University in Omaha, you can earn a diploma in Practical Nursing in 50 weeks. The course prepares you to take the NCLEX-PN exam and to apply for licensure and entry-level employment as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Some of the classes you will take include Nursing Foundations and Medical Surgical Nursing. You’ll learn about nutrition, anatomy and physiology and pharmacology in the classroom. You’ll have the opportunity to practice nursing skills in practice labs, and you’ll learn to perform procedures and provide care in clinical situations.

Kaplan University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Practical Nursing program is also approved by the Nebraska Board of Nursing and by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

The campus is conveniently located near downtown Omaha. The entire campus is accessible to people with disabilities. The school has an excellent library and resource center, and students have access to other area libraries (including the University of Nebraska Omaha) through the State Open Access Program. On-campus housing is available for students who live outside of Omaha.

Kaplan University has a positive relationship with the University of Nebraska, and many of the classes taken at Hamilton transfer directly to UNL.

Financial Aid

Kaplan University participates in a number of financial aid programs. Students can apply for Federal and State student aid by completing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. Hamilton also participates in the Kaplan Loan Program and is approved for Veteran’s Benefits.

Many students work while they go to college, and the Career Center helps them find and apply for off campus jobs. In addition to listing local job openings, students who want to work can get help with job hunting skills and interviewing skills at the Career Center. Students continue to receive placement assistance after graduation.

Going to School in Omaha

Located on the banks of the Missouri River on the eastern edge of Nebraska, Omaha lies directly across the river from Council Bluffs, Iowa. Here you'll find a historic city filled with architecture, old and new including the historic Orpheum Theater and the new Holland Performing Arts Center.

OmahaIf you enjoy fine dining, Omaha is known for its bistros and upscale restaurants with plenty of top chefs creating innovative cuisine and serving the popular Omaha beef. Omaha has its share of theater and a hot music scene.

The city has been growing and Omaha headquarters several major corporations including Berkshire Hathaway, run by the Oracle of Omaha Warren Buffett, The Gallup Organization, Mutual of Omaha and ConAgra Foods.

There is a section of downtown called Old Market where you can find plenty of restaurants, bars, shops and art galleries. You can ride horse drawn carriages down the brick streets or walk around and watch street performers.

Omaha is also the smallest city in the U.S. to support two major research hospitals. The University of Nebraska Medical Center, a world renowned cancer treatment center, and the Creighton University Medical Center. There are also at least 9 other medical centers in the area including Omaha Veterans Administration Hospital and Children's Hospital.
