About the Medical Assisting Program

The health care industry continues to grow, so now is the time to prepare for a career in this challenging field.  A medical assistant is a valuable member of any health care team in doctors’ offices, clinics, hospitals, labs, and nursing homes.  They are responsible for preparing patients to see the doctor, taking blood pressure, weighing and measuring patients, and recording medical histories.

Pomona Nursing StudentDuties may also include setting up exam rooms, giving immunizations, and administrative duties like scheduling appointments, ordering supplies, and handling insurance forms and correspondence.

The duties are varied, and North West is diligent about preparing students to be successful medical assistants.  In addition to learning secretarial duties, office procedures, and communications, students of NWC’s Medical Assistant program will learn lab and EKG procedures as well as vital computer skills.

In addition to courses specific to the Medical Assistant program, students also benefit from ongoing job preparation.  Career planning is emphasized throughout the course of study. Students preparing to graduate have access to an online job links library for help in finding a great place to start their careers.  Also, NWC provides a placement assistance program.

While placement is not guaranteed, the staff does provide all possible assistance for students.
