With the advancing of technologies and the increasing geriatric population, vocational nursing is becoming a profession in high demand as it provides the essential support for physicians, patient care and health care facilities.
Kaplan College offers the expert knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to take advantage of this growing trend, allowing graduates to fill an ever-increasing need for nursing services.
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent for entry in specific programs. Nursing students must also complete the Nursing Entrance Test (NET) before admission.
Vocational Nursing - Certificate
Now more than ever before, vocational nursing is in demand at doctor’s offices, clinics and hospitals where it plays a vital role in health care. LVN's provide a necessary compliment to the health care support environment by giving their services in such areas as data collection, basic bedside nursing, tracheotomy care, infection control procedures, medication administration and documentation, and patient education. These graduates are integral parts of the health care support team.
The LVN program at Kaplan College leads to a certificate that allows graduates to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN), certifying them to practice as LVN's in the state of California. They will have the necessary skills and expert knowledge required for entry-level positions as acute care staff nurses, home health nurses, licensed vocational nurses (after passing state exam), long-term care charges or staff nurses, phlebotomy/blood bank nurses and public school LVN's/health clerks.
Students will learn fundamentals and principles of nursing with foundational courses in medical terminology, physiology and psychology. Students will also be given an in depth knowledge of maternal-newborn, pediatric, medical-surgical and geriatric nursing.
Nursing - Associate of Science
Available at Kaplan College - San Diego in an Associate's Degree curriculum, the nursing program is designed to prepare graduates to seek entry-level employment as a registered nurse. Coursework includes prep for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) for licensure as a registered nurse.
In addition to learning about the anatomy and physiology of the human body, students of the AOS in Nursing program will learn about leadership and management skills, patient teaching, drug classifications and other pharmacological principles, human behavior, and how to become a contributing member of a health care team. Upon graduation and certification, students may seek employment as a rehab nurse, long-term care nurse, health care facility nurse, or ambulatory care nurse.
Patient Care Assistant/Technician - Certificate
A certificate course of study, the Patient Care Assistant/Technician program at Kaplan College - San Diego is designed to equip graduates with the skills needed in order to seek employment as a unit/ward clerk, rehab aide, home health aide, patient care technician, EKG or ER technician, or a certified nursing assistant.
Coursework centers around the skills needed in order to become a successful member of a professional health care team. In addition to learning how to set up equipment in order to treat patients, students will learn how to walk patients with a gait belt, and help with community outings. This program and its coursework is approved for Certified Nursing Assistant and Home Health Aid exams monitored by the State of California.
Nurse Assistant - Certificate
If you're interested in a career as a private/registry home care companion, acute care certified nurse assistant (level 1) or a long-term care certified nurse assistant (level 1), the Nurse Assistant Certificate Program at Kaplan College might be right for you.
In addition to learning about body mechanics, students of the Nurse Assistant program will study long-term care patient needs, observation, charting, rehabilitative nursing, and strategies for preventing and managing catastrophes and unusual occurrences.
