About National American University
National American University was started in 1941 as a business college, focusing primarily on secretarial and accounting classes. When WWII veterans began to return home, NAU answered the need for advanced business education by adding courses and faculty.
Since then, the university has continued to expand its course offerings and faculty. Today, NAU is a fully accredited university offering baccalaureate and graduate level education.
When internet-based distance learning and adult educational models were introduced, NAU began to offer on-line classes. Today, NAU offers classes at 16 physical campuses and a virtual campus.
You can complete educational requirements on campus, on line or in a “blended” format, where some classes are online and some are on campus.
NAU’s programs include small class sizes (15-24), a caring and supportive environment and a culture of diversity. The school offers technical and professional continuing education, undergraduate education and graduate education in health care, business and business-related fields utilizing traditional, accelerated and distance learning formats.
About the Nursing Programs
At the Sioux Falls campus, NAU offers an RN to BSN degree completion program. This program is entirely online, and can be completed in 18-24 months. To be accepted into the program, you must have an Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse and have a cumulative average of 2.5 in your previous classes.
The RN to BSN program builds on what you learned in your previous nursing education and practice. You receive advanced practice knowledge in managed care, ethical and legal issues, risk management and caring for vulnerable populations. NAU BSN graduates are prepared for leadership positions in teaching, clinic management, project management, hospital management and wellness.
Although all courses are online, you work with an online “cohort,” a group of individuals with the same professional goals you have. You support and encourage one another and learn together.

Going to School in Sioux Falls
A city rich in history, the story of Sioux Falls revolves around the cascades of the Big Sioux River. Created about 14,000 years ago when the last glacial ice sheet redirected the flow of the river into the large looping bends of its present course, the falls are a captivating sight. Fueled by water from the melting ice, the river exposed the underlying Sioux quartzite bedrock, the hard pinkish stone of the falls.
Settled in the 1850's, Sioux Falls has been marked by impressive growth throughout the 20th century, and development continues at a strong pace today. In addition, the city excels in health, public safety, education, economics, environment and community life, ranking third out of 140 cities.
In addition to its natural beauty, Sioux Falls also has a booming entertainment district. With over 4,000 hotel rooms, and 500 restaurants inside the city limits, there is never any shortage of things to do. Sioux Falls also has the largest shopping center between Minneapolis and Denver, making it a great place to live and go to school!
