About Gulf Coast College

nursing schools tampaWith the tremendous increase in-patient and health care industry needs, nurses of every stripe are in demand in numbers never before known.  Gulf Coast College has been providing top quality nursing education for over forty years.  They provide a variety of programs to suit the varying needs of students and the health care industry in general.

 

Associate in Science Degree in Nursing: RN-AS

This program is a full time 2-year Associate of Science degree in nursing that prepares students for joining the health care industry in entry-level positions. 

Students of this program are expected to take 30 credit hours in development psychology, physiology, anatomy, nutrition, sociology, microbiology, humanities and English.  The students are also expected to complete, during this two-semester program, 19 credit hours in pharmacology, nursing practice, nursing care and gerontological nursing. 

After completion the graduate may write the NCLEX-RN and be certified as a registered nurse. This degree can lead to higher academic accreditation in nursing such as a bachelor's or master's degree or even a doctorate in nursing.

Traditional LPN to ADN Articulation

LPNs wishing to upgrade to the RN classification may take this program to receive their degree.  Students will only be admitted to this program after successfully completing entrance requirements and appropriate Excelsior College examinations. 

Students of this program are expected to successfully complete 30 credit hours in such courses as physiology, anatomy, microbiology, English, humanities, nutrition and pharmacology.  Students are also expected to complete 15 credit hours in such courses as LPN to ADN transition, maternal-infant nursing and psychiatric mental health nursing.  After successfully completing the NCLEX, students will be given an associate degree in nursing.

Weekend LPN to ADN Articulation

This program is the same as the traditional program, but can be completed in a part-time format. This can be a huge help for students who want to complete a degree but must also have a day-job to support their families.

Advanced Placement into the Associate Degree Nursing Program

This program allows those students with partial credits at other institutions to transfer and complete their studies at Gulf Cost College.  Upon graduation and successful completion of the NCLEX, graduates will receive an associate degree in nursing.  Please note that an applicant’s previous performances must meet or exceed a “C” average in order to be admitted.

Faculty and Facilities

Gulf Coast College has a stringent hiring policy in regards to their faculty.  They require years of professional experience, quality education and training,   as well as a background and proclivity for teaching nursing in an informative, friendly and up to date atmosphere.

Gulf Coast College is located in Tampa on the Gulf of Mexico overlooking its bottle blue waters and opened its doors in 1957 on the grounds of an old shipyard.  This facility is one of the largest of its kind in Florida and provides cutting edge education, using only the best equipment and up to date facilities.

Financial Aid

Students wishing to apply for financial assistance can fill out a FAFSA form.  Those students who are eligible may qualify for such funding as Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG), Academic Competitiveness Grants (ACG), Florida Student Assistant Grants (FSAG), Stafford Loans, Parent Plus Loans, private loans, Veterans Affairs benefits, Gulf Coast Community College Foundation Scholarships and Returning Students Programs, not to mention a variety of other options.  The college suggests students visit the financial aid office in order to determine what options are best for their particular financial situation.

Going to School in Tampa

It is located on the west coast of Florida, approximately 200 miles northwest of Miami, 180 southwest of Jacksonville, and 20 miles northeast of St. Petersburg. The population of the City represents approximately one-third of the total population of Hillsborough County. Tampa's economy is founded on a diverse base that includes tourism, agriculture, construction, finance, health care, government, technology, and the port of Tampa. Contributing to the success of our community is the way businesses, City government, and citizens work together to make Tampa a better place to live.

Tampa is situated on the west coast of Florida and sports a population of approximately 350,000.  Tampa, known for its sub-tropical weather, cigars, beaches, entertainment and tourism, is full of historical landmarks such as the Sulphur Springs Water Tower, Bayshore Boulevard, Babe Zaharias Golf Course, the Park Tower and the Tampa Riverwalk. 

Tampa is also steeped in entertainment and culture with its SoHo District, Channelside and Ybor City.  Shopping is a many and varied experience in Tampa.  There are numerous festivals such as the Outback Bowl, Gasparilla Pirate Festival, Sant’Yago Knight Parade, Florida State Fair and Guavaween.  Sports fans also have many things to take in while in Tampa.  In short, there is no shortage of things to enjoy in the off hours while students attend Gulf Coast College receiving an excellent education.
